What Is a Rotary Table?
Rotary tables have long been a favorite among those who play electric billiards and other pool games. In spite of their popularity, many new players have been put off with rotary tables because of one very basic thing: cost. Rotary tables cost several thousand dollars and even then, the price is still somewhat on the high side. That cost can be reduced significantly by purchasing a used direct drive table instead of a new one. Used direct drives can be found for as little as half the price of a new one, sometimes even less.
A rotary table is a relative newcomer to the world of pool and billiards, having only recently entered the competitive scene. The first rotary table to enter the competitive arena was the SolidTek Reactor, an excellent billiard product that remains a top choice today. It featured a tilting platform similar to that of a lathe but with direct drive capabilities. Like the SolidTek, the cnc rotary table offered a variety of tilting angles with a choice between fixed and variable speeds. It is interesting to note that the SolidTek was not the first rotary table to be developed in the USA; in fact, it was probably only the second one to be sold.
CNC Rotary Tables was developed after the SolidTek research, and feature cutting edge technology based upon the direct drive principle. CNC rotary tables have low runoff and better ball retention than their SolidTek counterparts. They also have the advantage of being able to produce custom-curved shafts, which eliminates the need for pre-machined faces. Many of the leading manufacturers of CNC rotary tables use a proprietary grinding system to produce these superior products.
High Speed Table: High speed CNC tables are available and generally use either Direct or Rotary drive. High speed operation is achieved by increasing the rotation speeds through a variable multiplier. High speed tables generally use a spindle with a counter-clockwise turn lock. High speed CNC tables come with various features including: high-speed indexing, anti-slice devices, high-speed ball bearings, high-precision bearings, high-speed programming facility, and high-speed programming.
Face Gear Sets: Face gears are used on direct drive rotary tables. There are four different face gears sets. These sets are: 0 degree face gears, a zero degree face, a half-degree face, and a full degree face. Most high speed CNC tables come with these four gears sets.
Indexing: The most important quality of any CNC machine is its ability to accurately and quickly index. High torque is required in order to achieve high accuracy. High torque results in faster tool change rates, but it also requires more power from the operator. High accuracy is necessary to produce professional results and minimize operator fatigue. High torque is achieved by varying the spindle speeds during tool changes. It is important to have a high accuracy rotary table with high torque and high speed programming.
