A rotary table is a precision mechanical device used mainly in the fabrication industry to position workpieces on a rotating shaft. It allows the operator to cut or drill work at precise intervals around an adjustable axis. It is designed to perform a wide range of tasks, including surface adjustments, hole drilling, and casting. The rotary table can be used as a simple lathe or can incorporate many other features, such as an electronic readout and a worm drive.
There are many different kinds of rotary tables available. Some of these are hydraulic, electrical, or hydraulic-piston. Most operate using a single screw thread on the lower end of the plate. The upper shaft of the rotary is fitted with pins or bolts. This upper shaft can be locked or released by turning a knob on the table itself.
The benefits of the rotary table include accuracy, speed, power, and repeatability. Speed is largely improved when using a Hydraulic Rotary Table. This type of table offers greater speed and accuracy for cutting holes in different sizes than that offered by electric or pneumatic drill machines. It also makes it easier to drill tiny holes for milling, rather than attempting to use a drill press.
Hydraulic rotary tables are most often used for horizontal fabrication where there are limited space and little detail to work on. In this case, the speed and accuracy are of less importance due to the small size of the workpiece. Because the size of the hole requires only a very small amount of movement to make it acceptably deep into the material, it eliminates the need for a large number of rotary speeds. This is especially beneficial for small holes that are difficult to drill at high speeds, such as those associated with casting.
Another type of rotary table used for small to medium-sized fabrication projects are the worm and screw rotary tables. They differ from their vertical and horizontal counterparts because their axis of rotation does not change when the material being machined rotates. Instead, the worm component moves perpendicular to the shaft, creating a natural counterbalance to prevent slipping.
Other advantages include smaller cost for the machine, which can reduce the overall cost of a machine. This is particularly important for smaller machining operations where fast production is key. Additionally, the accuracy of a rotary table can be increased through the use of an indexer. An indexer is a device that is attached to a table and helps to precisely machine the workpiece while reducing errors caused by inaccurate rotation of the table’s axis of rotation.
