A Direct Drive Rotary Table (or commonly known as a “Dummy Rotary Table“) is a popular collector’s item and is a type of performance racing table that features an electrical motor to simulate the operation of a full-sized, rotating table without the expensive materials and high-power bearings that normally come with a rotary style table. Direct Drive Rotary Table is made from a heavy duty steel frame and is very sturdy. Unlike a true Rotary Table, which needs a center post to support the top-end, a dummy Rotary Table has a single, unidirectional shaft with two shafts that run parallel to each other that provide the torque necessary for smooth, even, speed-of-turn operation. Direct Drive Rotary Tables is available in many configurations, but the most popular models are self-assembled models which allow users to install the shaft into the wall at their desired level of height.
These types of motors have many advantages over their CNC (Computer Numerated Control) counterparts such as accuracy, speed and reliability. CNC machines use a computer-controlled machine to program the desired specifications for each piece of equipment, which requires programming and precise timing to achieve speeds that are virtually impossible to achieve manually. Direct drive rotary tables have no mechanical reduction system like a CNC’s worm gear system, no need to use a computer or any other electronics, and offer high speed, high torque, and accurate operation. The only limitation is the maximum operating torque of the electric motor!
An example of a Direct Drive Rotary Table is the Pro Lite Rotary Engine. The Rotary Engine is a complete all-electric remote control system with four fully programmable performance levels and a variable-speed transmission. It uses a Direct Drive Rotary Table that is highly accurate and has an automatic anti-backwash system. When the motor is on, the table itself revolves at an extremely fast speed with little backwash. When the table is not moving the crane moves out to the right and the truck rotates to the left, providing an exact amount of thrust with minimal thrusting.
With a direct drive rotary table, there is no need to worry about lubrication, so there is no dust or gunk build up to cause a machine malfunction. There are two types of high-torque electric motors available for direct drive rotary tables: high torque electric motors and high speed electric motors. High torque electric motors are typically used for applications requiring a high degree of accuracy and speed. While high speed electric motors are typically used in applications requiring a high degree of precision, but speed is not the only factor affecting the operation of a direct drive rotary table. Certain designs are limited by the spring tension of the cranes and certain types of drives require very high torque to insure good cleanliness and smoothness.
Most modern day Direct Drive Rotary Tables is designed with a zero-backlash design. Zero Rebound (ZR) models are becoming more popular in contemporary production facilities. A zero backlash direct drive rotary table allows for very accurate adjustments with very little backlash. One drawback of having a zero backlash table is that it requires additional gearing to allow the drive to operate between zero degrees and thirty-five degrees. This additional gearing increases cost and reduces the usefulness of the table.
There are several manufacturers that make direct drive rotary tables and many of these companies produce a wide range of rotary tables. Most production facilities use the Pristine brand that is manufactured by Precision Engineering Corporation. Other brands of Direct Drive Rotary Table include Cen-Tec, Kubota, and Honda. There are many model designers who specialize in the design of direct drive rotary tables. These model designers often work with a manufacturer to produce a unique model.
