Different Types of Palletizing Systems
In the world of warehouses, there are two kinds of systems that have become very popular in recent years, and they are palletizing systems and robotic pallets. A palletizer is a machine that rolls or pushes down pallets of materials, such as wood, plastic, paper, or metal, and then brings them back up to the surface of the work surface. If you see a big warehouse with many different types of pallets stacked up, then you probably see pallets. Palletizing, however, is usually associated with distribution and storage.
There are two broad classifications of palletizing systems: automated and semi-automated. The semi-automatic type of system includes some robotic equipment that is designed to move material handling equipment from place to place, such as from floor to floor in a large warehouse. This type of automation has been successful in certain industries, such as with material handling applications, but has largely been lost to the cheaper and more efficient automated automation systems. The most common use of semi-automated palletizers is in the manufacturing and distribution industries, though their use in the hospitality industry is beginning to grow as well.
Automated palletizing systems, such as the type that uses cranes, are powered by forklifts. The worker is still needed, as this system relies on manual support to stack the crates in a particular order. The advantage of this system is that there is no need for a human pallet manager, since the operator of the forklift can keep track of how many stacks are being stacked at once. The system can also handle multiple crates at a time, and the operator can make small adjustments on the cranes as needed.
Because they rely on mechanical cranes, some automated palletizing systems can be controlled from a distance. This may allow a manufacturer to place their machines in very difficult places, such as near shipping areas or around machinery. The lifting capability of these machines may help support lifting loads far beyond their maximum capacity. For example, in packaging applications, a robotic palletizer might be used to move pallets in and out of packaging booths, as well as to stack boxes on top of each other and transfer them to the truck or storage unit.
Depalletizing Systems can be powered by either Hydraulic or Electric driven hydraulic units. These types of systems are often powered via a series of hydraulic pistons. This type of system requires an operator to control the process, although there are software packages available to allow the user to do just this. Depalletizing is sometimes used to flatten items such as aluminum cans, which have a high tolerance for wear and tear. The Hydraulic models work best when packing soft metal objects, such as pipes, while the electric version works best with compressed materials such as Styrofoam or foam.
The most common use for palletizing systems today is to service the material handling process in a wide variety of industries. This includes dry cleaning, packaging, and many other types of services, each requiring a unique pallet or rack designed for that particular industry. Most companies prefer to hire a company that specializes in palletizing, as they will have the experience and knowledge to properly install and maintain the system.
