A rotary table is an exact work placement machine used mainly in the metalworking industry. It allows the owner to cut or drill work around a given axis at exact intervals. In a rotary table there are usually six vertically positioned fixed work plates that are arranged in a circular pattern around the vertical shaft of the rotary cutter. These work plates can be made of steel or some other suitable material such as wood. The holes that are drilled using the rotary cutters are fed through a series of sprockets, which in turn, drive the small pins that are fitted into the holes on the plate edges.
There are two types of rotary tables that are generally used today. One type is the table saw which is fixed to the work surface with the help of a tailstock. This rotary table is fixed on top of the work and its cutting tool is usually mounted on the lower part of the bed. The work surface can either be plywood or sheet metal. The other is called the drill press that is much like the rotary table but it has a stationary drill press head on a fixed shaft. The drill press can be moved by turning the handle and can be mounted on either the floor or table top.
Rotary table saws are used mainly for cutting horizontal patterns into wood. However, they can also be used for cutting large diameter objects such as tubes and pipes and for various other purposes. Drill presses are used for drilling very deep into surfaces such as metals. A drill press can be motorized so that it can run on its own, making it the more efficient and versatile rotary table.
The speed and force with which the rotary table moves varies according to the diameter of the drilled hole and the type of material being cut. A general rule is that the higher the diameter of the hole drilled, the faster the rotary table must move in order to reach the desired speed. The speed at which it moves is directly related to the strength of the traveling drill line. It can be considered as the weakest link of the system because if this link is weak, the entire system will be affected.
The speed of the rotary table can be controlled by means of a simple potentiometer that operates on a variable resistor and capacitor. This allows the user to set the speed corresponding to different types of materials or complex curves. There are many different types of milling machines including the screw jack, rotary table, drill press, diamond drills, tile saws and the jig saw. A wide variety of attachments including drill bits, stone drills, and rubber and plastic wedges can be added to these basic machines. They also can be powered electrically or mechanically with electric motors, pneumatic pressure jets, or diesel engines.
