A CNC internal grinding machine has a computer, which automatically controls the rotation of a thin, hollow plastic or metal grinding wheel attached to a fixed rigid internal grinding shaft. The CNC internal machine is programmed to repeat a given set of operations until the desired end result is achieved. These CNC machines are designed to provide a precise finish to work pieces and come in various sizes. They are very popular with furniture and hobby shops.
There are two types of CNC internal grinders: ones with in-line rotary tables and ones with rotary tables on wheels. The in-line CNC grinders are more expensive than the wheel-based ones. Both types of CNC grinders can complete tasks such as, drilling holes in parts and quickly switching between different grind settings. This is done by using the computer software for programming the CNC internal grinders. The CNC internal grinding machine has the advantage of not having to use a motor for counter-clockwise (or forward) movement, thus saving power and resulting in smoother operation.
An internal CNC grinding machine consists of a housing with an in-built pc board and a pc-board interface. This interface facilitates connection to a PC or a computer through a serial cable or through a USB connection. The PC or the computer is programmed with programmable instructions that instruct the internal CNC grinder how to execute the desired task. This is achieved when the work piece is placed into the grinding machine’s work area.
An internal CNC grinder uses a pair of cutting tools to remove the work piece from its slot in the grinding wheel. One of these cutting tools is attached to the inside edge of the work piece while the other one is attached at the top of the work piece. As the grinding wheel turns, it also creates a ‘drift’ in the work piece which is caused by a rotation about the axis of the CNC machine. This drift is the reason why the internal CNC machine moves at a slower pace as compared to the main CNC machines. This drift however can be corrected manually by adjusting the machine’s operating speed.
There are three types of CNC internal cylindrical grinding machines namely X axis, Y axis and Z axis. In a machine using the X axis, the work piece is positioned in a horizontal direction while the Z axis machine works in a vertical direction. The X-axis internal CNC grinders are used for making prototypes and other intricate pieces. The Y-axis machine works for making prototypes of metals and other non-metals. The Z-axis machine, on the other hand, is utilized to manufacture products in large quantities and is commonly used for mass production.
Aside from these differences, there is still some more difference that might be experienced between the main and the internal CNC grinding machines. The two types of CNC machines have different features which are useful for different manufacturing processes. Although both machines can manufacture parts with same quality, they still have various differences which might be noticeable for the ones who are into industrial manufacturing.
