Carpet Cutting Tips – How to Cut to Length Lines
It is a challenge for the carpet installer to cut to length lines in the carpet without damaging it. The easiest way to get it done is to do it on the floor with a flat edge and not on the carpeting. You could mark the lines and cut them at the same time if you are not sure how to do it.
If you have some carpet that is longer than others, then you can get it cut all the way through the carpet. You will first need to remove the old carpet, if any. If there is no carpet, then use a masticating material. Be careful to avoid ripping through the backing as this can damage the backing and cause it to fall apart. You will also have to be very careful when removing the old carpet backing.
Remove the backing by pulling it up off the carpet. Place a carpet tile under the backing to protect it. If the backing is scratched or damaged, get it repaired. You may need to take a piece of carpet and cut it in half. Be careful as the edges can be very sharp.
If there is no backing on the carpet, then you will need to cut through the backing using a utility knife. There is no need to scrape the backing. You can get more carpeting out of the backing so it can be reused if it was damaged. You should still check to make sure there is no damage to the backing. If you do not have any other choice, then it should be possible to leave it on the carpeting.
On the carpeting, slide the utility knife between the carpeting and carpet. Be careful as the carpet can be very soft. As you cut, make sure you do not rip through the backing.
When you are done cutting, you will be left with a round hole and the backing will probably be intact but slightly damaged. To repair the damaged backing, cut through the top sheet of the backing. Use a piece of masking tape to make sure it is taped down. Cut out a square for the head of the cutting blade.
Slide the piece of the backing over the head and cut into it. Make sure to keep the two pieces together and move them around a bit to get the saw blade to cut between them. Scrape out the pieces of the backing if they are still intact. Sand the pieces of the backing if needed.
Now you have a simple cut for a length line. If the previous step does not work, try a more complicated technique. You can use a large ruler to cut the carpeting into a straight line. Using a shorter ruler will give you a more intricate shape.
